Celebrate Women Programs: June 2004

Farmington, Conn. – Celebrate Women, a women’s health membership program sponsored by the University of Connecticut Health Center, is offering a variety of health programs in June, including a CPR class designed for women and teens and a special discount for the annual Sunken Garden Poetry Series in Farmington.

Celebrate Women/Arbonne International Makeup Night: Ivy Bendixen, independent district manager for Arbonne International, makers of natural skin care products, will lead a workshop on how to maximize the use of make up. Attendees are asked to bring a mirror. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at AmeriSuites on 224 Greenmanville Avenue in Mystic.

Human 101: Getting What You Really Want in Life: Cris Jacobs, an instructor with the Energy Medicine School of the Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences in West Hartford, will lead an introduction to “core energetics.” This is a body-oriented psychology that helps you change the way you live your life so that you feel more fulfilled and alive, Jacobs explains. The introductory class will describe personal growth steps. The program will be held on Monday, June 14, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room (use main hospital entrance).

Family and Friends (Adult and Pediatric) CPR Class: This program is designed to train people in the skills of Basic Cardiac Life Support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The class will help participants review, organize and prioritize information and skills needed to manage a cardiac arrest and airway obstruction in adults, infants and children. The class will be taught by certified Emergency Medical Services staff and will be held on Saturday, June 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room (use main hospital entrance). The cost is $45 per person.

A Celebration of Women Through Poetry: Celebrate Women members can enjoy the culture and beauty of the Sunken Garden Poetry Series on the idyllic grounds of the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington this summer at a discounted rate of $3 per program. The series begins on June 2 with a reading by the distinguished poet Grace Paley. The readings will be held every other Wednesday through August 25 and run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Y-ME Support Group meets every other Monday in the UConn Cancer Center conference room from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Women who have had breast cancer or are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer are welcome to join.
