New Director of Nursing Named at UConn Health Center

FARMINGTON, Conn. – Ellen Leone, R.N., was named director of nursing and associate vice president for operations at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

She succeeds Jeanne Lattanzio R.N., who is retiring.

Leone returns to the Health Center from her most recent position as chief operating officer at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

“We’re delighted to have Ellen back at the Health Center in new capacities as director of nursing and AVP of operations,” said Steven Strongwater, M.D., hospital director. “She brings us a wealth of operational experience from her most recent position, yet she retains familiarity with the Health Center and that special sense of community developed by someone committed to our hospital, our patients and our health care.”

Prior to the Vineyard, Leone worked for a dozen-plus years in the Health Center’s John Dempsey Hospital, serving as director of the oncology service line and as nurse manager for several units including Medical 4 and the oncology units.

“I’m very excited and a little bit nervous about returning to the Health Center,” Leone said. “I realize I have some big shoes to fill. This is a wonderful opportunity and I’m thrilled at how things worked out,” she said. “The several times I’ve been on campus during the interview process and afterwards, felt like a ‘coming home’ to me.”

Leone earned her bachelor’s of science degree in nursing at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. and her master’s of science degree in nursing at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

She has widespread experience in nursing: as a staff nurse at Mass General Hospital, a public health nurse in Winsted, and an ICU nurse and clinical instructor in nursing education at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.

She began work at the Health Center in late-April.
