Dental School Faculty Member Recognized for Academic, Research and Clinical Excellence

UConn Board of Directors Honors Susan Reisine

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Recognized internationally for her work in the field of psychosocial outcomes of oral disease, her research work in the areas of arthritis and fibromyalgia, and her academic and administrative excellence, Susan Reisine, Ph.D., of West Hartford, is this year’s recipient of the UConn Health Center Board of Directors Faculty Recognition Award.

Dr. Reisine was given the award for “outstanding academic and clinical accomplishments and sustained excellence of the highest order in her professional endeavors.” She is professor and department head of Behavioral Sciences and Community Health and associate dean for research for the School of Dental Medicine. The award recognizes and celebrates excellence in faculty members.

Dr. Reisine received her first independent National Institutes of Health grant in 1981 and has maintained continuous funding since. She is also principal investigator of the UConn Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health, a joint effort of the schools of dental medicine and medicine. The center, which she spearheaded, was funded by the NIH in 2000 and is the only center of its kind in the nation at a dental school. In 2003, Dr. Reisine was awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioral Sciences and Health Services from the International Association for Dental Research.

“Cross-disciplinary work is important because it breaks down the artificial distinctions between the mouth and the body and allows insights developed in one area to be applied to others,” said Dean Robinson, who nominated Dr. Reisine. “Her ability to apply thinking to radically different clinical conditions is testimony to her intellectual stature and accounts for the sophistication and quality of her writing and research.”

The award was presented May 16 at commencement ceremonies of the UConn medical and dental schools. Dental School Dean Peter J. Robinson, D.D.S., Ph.D. accepted the award for Dr. Reisine, who was out of town attending her son’s college graduation ceremonies. He expressed her sincere gratitude and thanks to her family and colleagues for the opportunity to achieve this award and to the board for giving her this distinguished honor.

As a recipient of the recognition award, Dr. Reisine will receive a $10,000 prize and her name will be displayed on a permanent plaque at the Health Center.

Dr. Reisine is a graduate of the State University of New York, Stony Brook and received a master’s and Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University. She started her career at the Health Center as a research associate in 1976.
