Celebrate Health Programs: June 2006

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Health at the University of Connecticut Health Center encompasses two free membership programs, Celebrate Women and Celebrate Aging, that provide valuable health and wellness information for targeted audiences in the community. A variety of educational programs are being offered in June.

Men’s Night Out – Building Your Golf Swing: Has your body and posture changed since you learned to swing a golf club? The reason could be that you've built your golf swing on the body you used to have. Learn the proper mechanics of a golf swing and how limitations in strength, flexibility or balance can affect your swing. Mike Bidwell, certified athletic trainer at the UConn Health Center, will help you discover the proper exercises to address this issue and much more. The talk will be held on Thursday, June 1, from 6 to 7 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Medical Arts and Research Building at the UConn Health Center.

The Wellness Lecture Series at Seabury: Join us at the Seabury Retirement Community for a "healthy" lecture intended to promote successful aging. This month's talk explores the topic of stress management and will take place on Friday, June 2, from 11 to noon at 200 Seabury Dr., Bloomfield. The Wellness Lecture Series at Seabury is presented by Patrick Coll, M.D., professor and director of clinical programs, UConn Center on Aging and Division of Geriatrics. The lecture series is free and open to the public. To register or for more information, please call the Seabury Retirement Community at 860-243-6071.

Long-Term Care Insurance – Not an Issue Just for the Elderly: Have you ever wondered who would provide you with assistance if you were to develop a chronic condition that would limit your ability to function? Marcia Bernstein, licensed long-term care insurance agent, will give you an overview of the Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care that can help you plan for future nursing home and home care needs. The talk will be held on Tuesday, June 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center. Please note that this seminar is not affiliated with, or sponsored by, the Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care or the State of Connecticut. No insurance sales or solicitation will be allowed.

Parkinson’s Disease: Michael J. Fox and Janet Reno have Parkinson’s disease and another 50,000 are diagnosed each year. Nationally, more than 1.5 million people are living with Parkinson’s disease today. Beverly Greenspan, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at the UConn Health Center, will address the symptoms, causes, treatments, and latest advances towards finding a cure for this disease. It will be held on Wednesday, June 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. at The Gables at Farmington, 20 Devonwood Drive, Farmington. The talk is open to the public.

The Talks at Covenant Village of Cromwell: Join us once a month for an informative talk at Covenant Village of Cromwell. This month's topic takes a look at "Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)". Patrick Coll, M.D., professor and director of clinical programs, UConn Center on Aging and Division of Geriatrics, will provide insightful tips on how to remain healthy as you age. The talk will be held on Thursday, June 8, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the Commons Building, 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell. The talks are fee and open to the public.

Car Service Clinic for Women: It’s time women become more in tune with their cars! Gallagher Buick Pontiac GMAC will have on-site factory certified, trained mechanics who will teach you about oil changes, air bags, changing flat tires, and scheduled maintenance. This informal service clinic will allow women to become more comfortable with an area that is usually left up to men. Dental Implant Therapy: A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed in the jaw to hold a replacement tooth. Dental implants look and feel almost as natural as real teeth and are an ideal option for people who have lost a tooth. Rachel Squier, D.M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, Biomaterials, and Skeletal Development at the UConn Health Center, will discuss the rapidly growing field of dental implant therapy and the treatments available at the UConn School of Dental Medicine. The talk will be held on Monday, June 12th, from noon to 1p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center. The lecture can also be viewed live via web cast at www.celebrate.uchc.edu/webcast/.

A Stroke of Prevention: We’ve all heard of clogged arteries in the heart. But did you know the arteries and veins in your arms, legs or brain can become clogged in the same way? This condition is referred to as vascular disease and; if left untreated, can lead to heart attack, stroke, amputation and even death. Join us as James Menzoian, M.D., professor of surgery at the UConn Health Center, reviews the most common types of vascular diseases, symptoms, risk factors and what you can do to prevent or treat vascular disease. The talk is open to the public and will be held on Tuesday, June 13, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Chatfield, 1 Chatfield Drive, West Hartford.

Making Anger Your Friend: We all feel angry at times. Learn ways to be more accepting of anger in yourself and others and learn to use anger in new more positive ways. The interactive discussion with Cris Jacobs, core energetics practitioner, will include dealing with and understanding your anger, listening to anger in others, and improving communication skills so that you experience less anger. This talk will be an introduction to a series of four evening classes and will be held on Wednesday, June 21, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.
