Celebrate Women Programs: March 2007

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of educational programs are being offered in March.

Will and Grace – Yoga Flow: Power up. Encourage mind/body awareness while improving muscular strength and flexibility. This all-levels yoga class will provide self-discovery through a flow of postures, closing with a guided meditation. Join trainers Joy Perugini and Jenn Miller for a rewarding challenge of "will" and "grace." The class will be held on Saturday, March 3, from noon to 1 p.m. at Core Fitness, Inc., 1577 New Britain Ave., Farmington.

Strong Core Workout: This class will help strengthen your core abdominal and lower back muscles and improve your balance, strength, and flexibility. Lynn MacDonald, certified personal trainer, will also offer a variety of Pilates moves and integrate Swiss balls for a challenging workout. All levels are welcome. The class will be held on Wednesday, March 7, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Academic Research Building, EG-013, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10. Bring a Swiss ball, mat or towel, and water.

Spirituality Study Group: Tap into your inner self, the source of guidance and advice on the things that matter most to us. Group sessions will be led by the Kathleen Kiley, an expert in spiritual healing and dream analysis, on the second Thursday of each month and will include discussion, reflection, dream interpretation, and guided meditations to unite your inner and outer self. The talk will be held on Thursday, March 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Medical Arts and Research Building, room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10.

Hepatitis from A to C: Liver specialist Dr. George Wu, gastroenterologist-hepatologist at the UConn Health Center, will present a thorough look at Hepatitis A, B, and C. He will discuss the epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of viral hepatitis. The talk will be held Monday, March 12, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. Parathyroid Disorders: The parathyroid glands are small glands located around the thyroid. One purpose of these glands is to regulate calcium level so the nervous and muscular systems can function properly. Dr. Beatriz Tendler, gastroenterologist-hepatologist at the UConn Health Center, will cover the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of parathyroid disorders. She will also discuss the effects of overproduction of parathyroid hormone, such as kidney stones and osteoporosis, and familial forms of parathyroid e xcess. The talk will be held on Wednesday, March 21, from 6 to 7:15 p.m., in the Onyiuke Dining Room, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
