Celebrate Women Programs: April 2007

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of educational programs are being offered in April.

Tai Chi for Health and Healing: Discover the many health benefits and how relaxed you will feel with the deep breathing and slow movements of Tai Chi. Risa Brophy has training in medical Qigong, the movements used to balance energy in the body for disease prevention and healing. Those new to Risa's class can try the first session for free without obligation. The class will be held on Mondays, April 9, 16, 23, 30 from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in Keller Auditorium at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee is $39 for the four-week series or $12 per class and registration is required.

Spirituality Study Group: Tap into your inner self, the source of guidance and advice on the things that matter most to us. Group sessions will be led by Kathleen Kiley, an expert in spiritual healing and dream analysis, on the second Thursday of each month and will include discussion, reflection, dream interpretation, and guided meditations to unite your inner and outer self. The talk will be held on Thursday, April 12, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Medical Arts and Research Building, room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10.

Benefits of Mind-Body and Energy Medicine in Patients with Cancer: Dr. Karen Prestwood with the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center will briefly explain mind-body and energy medicine and then discuss how they can be used in a complementary way to improve the lives of patients with cancer. This will be an experiential, as well as didactic session. The talk will be held on Thursday, April 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.

Hernias - Understanding the Problem and Today's Surgical Options: Dr. Yuri Novitsky, general surgeon at the UConn Health Center, will describe the epidemiology and natural history of abdominal wall hernias and the evolution of surgical techniques for hernia repair. He will also discuss the progress made in developing newer prosthetic meshes used today in hernia surgery and narrate a short video of a laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. The talk will be held Monday, April 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. Boost Your Color Confidence: Do you admire the warmth of color-filled homes, but hesitate to use color in your own space? Explore the possibilities of great color with interior decorator Kathy Hayes. Topics include choosing a color scheme, creating flow from room to room, and introducing color with fabric and accessories. Learn to use color with confidence, choose the perfect shade of paint, and fix color mistakes. Visit www.insidestoryct.com to sample her work.
