UConn Health Center September Programs

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Here is a list of University of Connecticut Health Center programs scheduled in September and early October.

  • “Ready to Lose” Weight Management Program
    Tuesdays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., UConn Health Center, Onyiuke Dining Room
    This program starts with an individualized introductory session (call to schedule) followed by six weekly sessions that include a weigh-in, discussion of successes and challenges, and tip of the week. Registration fee is $70. Call 800-535-6232 for more information.
  • Free IVF Information Session
    Thursday, September 1, 6 to 8:30 p.m., UConn Health Center, Conference Room EG013
    Specialists with the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services lead an informational session about current treatments for infertility, specifically in vitro fertilization (IVF). Each program includes an in-depth explanation of the IVF process, discussion of some of the emotional issues surrounding IVF, and discussion of options for financial planning.   • Breast-feeding Class
    Thursday, September 1, 7 to 9 p.m., UConn Health Center, Onyiuke Dining Room
    A certified lactation consultant leads a discussion of topics including the benefits of breast-feeding, how to get started, and how the rest of the family can help the breast-feeding mother as well as how to continue breast-feeding and working.   • Free Hospital Maternity Tours
    Saturday, September 3, 3:30 p.m., UConn Health Center, Main Lobby
    A representative will guide you through labor and delivery, postpartum, and the nursery at John Dempsey Hospital. Children and grandparents are welcome. The free tours are held every other Saturday. Call 800-535-6232 to register or for more information.
  • Nutrition for a Healthy Heart
    Wednesday, September 7, 2 to 4 p.m., UConn Health Center, Dowling North Building
    The UConn Health Center’s Healthy Nutrition program invites you on a journey to a lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol and healthier weight. This group meets on the first Wednesday of the month. Registration fee is $30. Call 800-535-6232 for more information.
  • Free Diabetes Support Group
    Thursday, September 8, 5 to 6 p.m., UConn Health Center, Friends Lecture Room (LM034)
    Taking care of your diabetes can be difficult. Meet and share some of your challenges and successes with other people who have diabetes.   • Foot and Ankle Screenings
    Friday, September 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., St. Mary’s Church Hall, 145 Main Street, Unionville
    The New England Musculoskeletal Institute’s Foot and Ankle Center is offering free osteoporosis screenings and $10 initial foot and heel pain screenings with an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon. FootPrints is offering free computerized orthotic evaluations. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are preferred. Call 860-679-7692.
  • Infant Care Class
    Monday, September 12, 7 to 9 p.m., UConn Health Center, Onyiuke Dining Room
    Offered for expectant parents and caregivers, the discussion topics include appearance and behavior of the newborn, car seat and home safety issues, well child care and the importance of immunizations, choosing a pediatrician, and practice with diapering and bathing a newborn.   • Free Nine-week Program for Expectant Parents
    Wednesdays, September 14 through November 9, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Family Wellness Center, 85 Lafayette Street, New Britain
    The Nurturing Families Network and the Family Wellness Center of New Britain offer a free nine-week series for expectant parents on topics including pregnancy and parenting adjustment, parent-child attachment, infant crying, infant feeding, infant sleeping, and establishing routines.   • Free Quilting Support Group for Women

  • Free Bladder Cancer Support Group

    Patients, family members and caregivers (not limited to UConn Health Center patients) are invited to join others whose lives have been touched by bladder cancer. This support group, established in partnership with the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, is the only group of its kind in New England.     This one-day class covers anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and labor, emotions of pregnancy, nutrition, fetal growth and development, comfort measures for labor, working with unexpected events in labor, cesarean delivery, and practice of relaxation and breathing techniques for labor. Class size is limited to eight couples. Remember to bring two pillows and wear comfortable clothing. Light snack is provided. Fee is $100.   • Free Skin Cancer Screenings at South Park Inn 5k Road Race and Fitness Walk
    Sunday, October 2, 8 to 11 a.m., UConn Health Center, Dowling North, 3rd floor
    The UConn School of Medicine is offering free melanoma and skin cancer screenings as part of the 14th annual South Park 5k Road Race and Fitness Walk. UConn Health Center dermatology faculty, residents and attending physicians will provide screenings and teach patients how to detect melanoma when it’s in its earliest, most treatable stage. Proceeds from the South Park 5K Road Race and Fitness Walk benefit the UConn School of Medicine Outreach Clinic at the South Park Inn, which provides primary care medical services to the transient residents of the South Park Inn Shelter in Hartford. The free clinic is run by medical students and local physician volunteers. The race starts at 9 a.m., with registration starting at 7 a.m. at Dowling North.   • Free Educational Program: ‘Exercising for a Healthy Heart’

The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center’s Lifestyle Modification Program will cover the benefits of exercise and a healthy heart, the best types of exercise, and the amount of time you need to exercise and how to get started.
