Governor-elect Dan Malloy made a brief trip to the Health Center on Monday. Malloy videotaped a welcome message for the new Governor’s website that will be posted following his inauguration on January 5.

The Health Center’s Biomedical Media Communications (BMC) Department is working with the Connecticut Department of Information Technology (DoIT) on the website. When Malloy requested taping a video message, DoIT recommended BMC because it is the best equipped multimedia production facility in the state system.

BMC provides a wide range of video, multimedia, and computer-assisted communications programs, and video teleconferencing production services to health care and education professionals, primarily those associated with the University of Connecticut Health Center, as well as other State of Connecticut agencies.

“Roughly a quarter to a third of the production work we do is for clients outside of the Health Center,” says Bill Hengstenberg, director of BMC since 1990. “Most of it is for other state agencies. It is a win/win for all as it brings additional outside income into our budgets, subsidizing our services; gives the other state agencies quality productions at a fraction of the cost of comparable outside production companies; and keeps the money within the state system so it has little to no effect on the overall state budget.”

Even though the Governor-elect was only here for a brief time, he spent a few minutes with Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, vice-president for health affairs and medical school dean, and Dr. Marja Hurley, interim senior associate dean for education, during which they welcomed him to the Health Center and wished him well in his new position. Malloy likely will return to BMC periodically in order to tape new video messages for the website.
