Body Image Is Topic of September 9th Discovery Series: Gina Barreca, Ph.D., Is Guest Speaker

Farmington, Conn. – Humorist and UConn professor Gina Barreca, Ph.D., will offer a sensible and entertaining perspective on the oh, so delicate topic of women and body image on Thursday, September 9, during a special Discovery Series program at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Barreca’s presentation is titled, “Is My Seat Becoming a Flotation Device? Women and the Fear of Fat.”

As always, the Discovery Series is free and begins at 7 p.m. in the Health Center’s Keller Auditorium. Registration is required. Please call 800-535-6232 or 860-679-7692.

Dr. Barreca is a professor of English literature and feminist theory at the University of Connecticut and the author of several books including the recently published, I’m With Stupid: One Man, One Woman, and 10,000 Years of Misunderstanding Between the Sexes Cleared Right Up, which was written with Gene Weingarten of the Washington Post, and The ABC of Vice: An Insatiable Woman’s Guide, which was illustrated by cartoonist Nicole Hollander.

Dr. Barreca’s works, which have been translated into Chinese, German, Spanish, Italian and Czech include the best-selling They Used to Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted, a landmark book on women's humor; Perfect Husbands (and Other Fairy Tales) and Too Much of a Good Thing Is Wonderful. She has also published, as an editor, The Penguin Book of Women’s Humor, the Signet Book of American Humor and A Sit-Down with the Sopranos: Watching Italian Culture on TV’s Most Talked-About Series.

She is currently working on a new book, Babes in Boyland: A Personal History of Coeducation, to be published next year. She is also a columnist for The Hartford Courant.
