A Healthy New Year for the Body, Mind and Spirit: Celebrate Women Programs, January 2005

Farmington, Conn. – Celebrate Women, the women’s health membership program of the UConn Health Center, is offering a variety of education programs to help women start the New Year on a healthy note.

Integrative Medicine and Menopause: Karen Prestwood, M.D., an experienced UConn Health Center physician who is board certified in both internal medicine and integrative medicine, will lead a discussion about complementary and alternative methods to manage menopause. Her talk will also touch upon the transition and transformation women face at this time in their lives. Dr. Prestwood’s talk will be held on Tuesday, January 11, from 5 to 6 p.m., at The Center Studio on 20 Isham Road in West Hartford.

Introduction to Being Human 101: Back by popular demand, Cris Jacobs, an instructor with the Energy Medicine School of the Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences in West Hartford, will lead an introduction to “core energetics.” This a body-oriented psychology that helps people change the way they live so they feel more fulfilled and alive. The introductory class will describe personal growth steps. The program will be held on Wednesday, January 12, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room and again on Monday, January 17, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Deep Relaxation Workshop: Zen yoga master Aaron Hoopes will lead a guided meditation program on Friday, January 14, from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room. The program is designed to help participants overcome anxiety and stress, release tension from the body and calm the mind.

ABCs of Investing: Accountant and financial planner Colleen Walsh, C.P.A., C.F.P., will lead a consumer-oriented presentation about the fundamental elements of investing on Thursday, January 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the small conference room of the Health Center’s Academic Research Building.

Winter Rejuvenation: Ivy Bendixen, independent district manager for Arbonne International, makers of natural skin care products, will lead a workshop on winter skin care. The workshop will be held on Friday, January 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Comfort Inn, 48 Whitehall Avenue in Mystic. There is a $10 fee for the program.

New Treatments for Peripheral Vascular Disease: Michael S. Dahn, an endovascular surgeon at the Health Center, and radiologist Mel Arici, M.D., will present new information about treatments for peripheral vascular disease, including treatments for persistent leg pain, blockages of the carotid artery, and treatments for varicose veins. The program, presented together with the Health Center’s Discovery Series, will be held on Tuesday, February 1, at 7 p.m., in the Health Center’s Keller Auditorium. The snow date is February 3.

Celebrate Women also introduces the following new classes and support groups:

Prenatal Yoga: Margaret Kirschner, a certified prenatal yoga instructor, will lead classes every Wednesday, starting January 12, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m., in the large conference room of the Health Center’s Academic Research Building. The cost is $10 per session. Classes will not be held on January 26, February 9, and April 13.

Guided Meditation for Health and Wellbeing: Tara Leary, a certified regression therapist, will lead weekly sessions to introduce women to the healing powers of meditation. The first class will be held on Wednesday, January 12, from 5 to 6 p.m., in the large conference room of the Health Center’s Academic Research Building. The cost is $50 for the four-week session. The group will not meet on January 19.

Being Human 101 – Getting More of What You Want in Life: This is a six-week workshop in “core energetics,” a body-oriented psychology that helps people change the way they live so they feel more fulfilled and alive. The workshop will be led by Cris Jacobs of the Energy Medicine School of the Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences in West Hartford. It will begin on Monday, January 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room.

Yoga Classes, including Chair Yoga, for Beginners and Advanced Students: A six week class will start on Monday, February 9, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., in the large conference room of the Health Center’s Academic Research Building. The class will be taught by Martha Trask, a certified yoga instructor, and is designed for beginners and advanced students. The class will explore various meditation and breathing styles, together with warm-up exercises and yoga postures. There is a $60 cost for the six week program.

Preeclampsia Foundation will meet on Friday, January 21, at 7 p.m., in the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Center for Women’s Health, conveniently located off the main Health Center lobby.

The Y-ME Support Group meets on the first and third Mondays of every month in the UConn Cancer Center conference room from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Women who have had breast cancer or are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer are welcome to join.
