Celebrate Women Programs, July & August 2005

A Fashion Show for “Girls and the Women Who Love Them”

Farmington, Conn. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the UConn Health Center, is offering a variety of educational programs in July and August including a fashion show for “Girls and the Women who Love Them.”

Here’s a look at the July schedule:

New Approaches to Managing Shoulder Pain: Gus Mazzocca, M.D., will speak about common disorders associated with shoulder pain and basic non-operative and operative treatments. Kevin Shea, M.D. will discuss what to do if shoulder surgery doesn’t work for you. Both physicians will share the research they are doing in this area. The talk will be held on Monday, July 11, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Zen Yoga and Deep Relaxation Workshop: Explore the connection between body and mind. Zen Yoga raises energy levels while relieving stress through peaceful, flowing movement and mindful breathing. Based on the ancient arts of China, Japan and India, Zen Yoga offers simple practices for healthy living. Bring a mat or towel. The $18 fee is payable to the instructor “Aaron Hoopes,” 1152 North Road, Vershire, VT 05079. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 19, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Here’s a look at the August schedule:

Diabetes, Depression and Heart Disease in Women: Julie Wagner, Ph.D. will begin with a general discussion of diabetes, depression and heart disease in women. She will then discuss the scientific thoughts about what contributes to heart disease and how diabetes and depression might work together to put women at an increased risk for heart disease. It will be held on Monday, August 8, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Celebrate Girls Fashion Show: The “Just Us Girls” series will present a fashion show for “Girls and the Women Who Love Them.” Fashion consultant Gari Lewis will speak on several fashion-related topics like shopping with a plan, impulse buying and color analysis. In addition to the fashion show, program highlights include: shopping and fashion tips from our experts, make-up specialist Tracy Gruber, a mother/daughter fashion panel and a guest appearance by Junior Miss Katelyn Meunch. The event is free and will be held on Saturday, August 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium at the UConn Health Center.

Celebrate Women will also continue the following classes and support groups:

Karate for Women: Instructor Darryl Baleshiski earned a 3rd degree black belt while training with Grand Master Eizo Shimabukuro in Okinawa. His classes are based on traditional Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate with an emphasis on the needs of women. You will learn how to defend yourself, how to reduce the chance of being attacked and how to maximize your own strengths. The four-week session will be held on Wednesdays, beginning July 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium at the UConn Health Center. $50 fee is payable to “Darryl’s Karate” and can be brought to class.

Tai Chi Classes: Instructor Risa Brophy will help you clear your mind and energize your body with deep breathing and slow movements of this ancient Chinese martial art. Ms. Brophy has been teaching Tai Chi for over 15 years. She has specialized training in Medical Qigong, Tai Chi movements used to stimulate and balance your energy in specific ways for disease prevention and healing. Discover Tai Chi’s many health benefits and how wonderfully relaxed you will feel! The five-week session will be held on Thursdays, beginning July 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium at the UConn Health Center. $49 fee is payable to “Risa Brophy,” 28 Birch Street, Unionville, CT 06085. If space is available, the drop-in rate is $10 per class.

Celebrate Women Book Club: Members will meet from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m., on Thursday, July 21, in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center. New members are welcome. To learn more or to register, contact Maro Titus at marotitus@msn.com
