Celebrate Women Programs: June 2005

Celebrate the Man in Your Life During National Men’s Health Week

Farmington, Conn. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the UConn Health Center, is offering a variety of educational programs in June including a special program focused on the man in your life and the major health issues he faces.

Here’s a look at the June schedule:

Create a Life You Love: This free introductory session will help you create a life you love by acting in energetic partnership with the world around you. Workshop leader, Beverly Sastri, will help you become more attuned to the life-changing opportunities, lessons and guidance that occur every day. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Yoga, Intuition and the Brain: Kate Callahan, certified yoga instructor, leads an in-depth yoga workshop that focuses on opening the channels between body and brain and intuition that can help achieve healthy mind-body connections. Three months of yoga is suggested. The $20 fee can be brought to class. The workshop is open to women and men and will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the large conference room of the Academic Research Building at the UConn Health Center.

Do You Smell What I Smell?: It’s hard to imagine life without our senses of smell and taste. Lost or impaired smell or taste is a very serious disorder that puts people at risk for other health problems. The talk, led by Norman Mann, M.D., will address the causes and treatment of taste and smell disorders. It will be held on Monday, June 6, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Getting More Out of Life: Join us for a free introductory talk on Core Energetics, a body-oriented psychology that helps you change the way you live your life so you feel more fulfilled and alive. Cris Jacobs, instructor with The Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences, will lead the discussion on Wednesday, June 8, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Snoring is a significant social problem but it can also be an indication of obstructive sleep apnea. Jeffrey Spiro, M.D., will discuss a new in-office procedure offered at the UConn Health Center which can eliminate snoring, how physicians distinguish “simple” snoring from sleep apnea, and treatment options for each. The talk will be held on Monday, June 13, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Men’s Night Out: This program will take place during National Men’s Health Week, June 13 – 19, and will focus on issues facing men of all ages. Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. It impacts wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, too. Topics will cover information on prostate cancer, benign prostataic hypertrophy (BPH), birth control for men, sexual performance over age 40 and much more! Speakers for the event will be Dr. Peter Albertsen and Dr. John Taylor with the Division of Urology at the UConn Health Center. The program is open to men and women and will be held on Tuesday, June 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium of the UConn Health Center.

Common Thyroid Disorders Affecting Women: Thyroid disease can sometimes be overlooked since many of its signs and symptoms are similar to a number of other conditions. Beatriz Tendler, M.D., will discuss the symptoms and possible treatments of common thyroid disorders on Thursday, June 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Human Resources Conference Room at UConn’s Mansfield Depot location.

Summer Dining Series: Start the summer off right by joining us for dinner and a tasty, light presentation over dessert at the award-winning Seasons Restaurant at the Avon Old Farms Hotel, Avon. We have arranged for a special meal that is sure to please any palate! The series kicks off on Tuesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. with a delicious three course dinner followed by author Barbara Hance giving us a taste of her new book “Don’t Buy Green Bananas…A Humorous Journey Through the Puzzling World of Aging.”

Our Dining Series continues on Tuesday, June 28 at 6 p.m. with another delicious dinner prepared just for you by the Season’s chef followed by an overview of how to “Create a Life You Love” presented by motivational speaker, Beverly Sastri. What’s New in Refractive Surgery?: Jeanine Suchecki, M.D. and William Ehlers, M.D., will educate you on common vision problems that can be corrected by laser eye surgery. They will talk about the pros and cons of the procedure along with the healing time and success rates. Our experts can help you to decide whether laser eye surgery is right for you! The talk will be held on Thursday, June 23, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.
