Dr. August Olivar Joins the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services

Fertility Expert & Hartford Practice are Now Part of UConn Center

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Fertility specialist August C. Olivar, M.D., and his Hartford-based practice, have joined the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, which is part of the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Olivar will continue to see patients on 100 Retreat Avenue, now known as the Center’s Hartford division.

Dr. Olivar is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology (Ob-Gyn) and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He is a professor of Ob-Gyn with the UConn School of Medicine and has been providing fertility care for couples for more than 30 years.

“The addition of the Hartford office creates a regional center of excellence for infertility care,” said John Nulsen, M.D., director of the Center. “By expanding our services throughout the state and strengthening our presence in Hartford County, we will enable more couples to gain access to the infertility treatments they need in facilities that are both state-of-the-art and convenient,” he said, adding that many couples can now receive much of their care closer to their home or work.

The Center’s main location is on the campus of the UConn Health Center in Farmington. A Hamden division opened in 2004.

Like the Hamden office, couples will receive many services in the Hartford division, including office visits, consults, ultra sounds and other diagnostic services. Some of the procedures associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF), the most aggressive treatment for infertility, are only available at the UConn Health Center facility.

In all, the Center offers a range of diagnostic services and treatments for couples who experience infertility. UConn was one of the first centers in Connecticut to offer IVF and continues to achieve success rates above the national average in many age groups and categories, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control.

Dr. Olivar is a graduate of San Marcos Medical School in Lima, Peru and completed a surgical internship at Brown University and an Ob-Gyn residency at Hartford Hospital. In addition, Dr. Olivar completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Peter Bent Brigham, Harvard Medical School. He is widely published and served as president of the Laser and Advanced Technology Society.

At the Center, he joins Dr. Nulsen as well as Donald Maier, M.D., chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at UConn Health Center, Claudio Benadiva, M.D., director of the Center’s IVF lab and David Schmidt, M.D., director of the Hamden office.

“We believe that with this new site and Dr. Olivar’s expertise, we can continue our tradition of being among the largest and most successful fertility programs in the state,” Dr. Nulsen added.
