Celebrate Women Programs: July 2007

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of educational programs is being offered in July.

Ovarian Cancer Prevention - What You Need to Know: Dr. Molly Brewer, director of gynecologic oncology, Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide information about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. Her objective is to educate women who are at increased risk for developing ovarian cancer. The talk will be held on Tuesday, July 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Newington Senior Center, 120 Cedar St., Newington.

Spirituality Study Group: Tap into your inner self, the source of guidance and advice on the things that matter most to us. Group sessions will be led by Kathleen Kiley, an expert in spiritual healing and dream analysis, on the second Thursday of each month and will include discussion, reflection, dream interpretation, and guided meditations to unite your inner and outer self. The group will be held on Thursday, July 12, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Medical Arts and Research Building, room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10.

In Vitro Fertilization: The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services offers many advanced treatments to help couples achieve successful pregnancies. Fertility specialist, Dr. John Nulsen, medical director of The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, will discuss these techniques, specifically in vitro fertilization (IVF), the emotional issues surrounding IVF, when a couple should seek medical help, and IVF success rates at UConn vs. the national average. The talk will be held on Thursday, July 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low M.D. Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.

Women's Self-Defense - Are You Prepared?: How safe do you feel when walking to your car at the mall or in an unfamiliar area? Are you prepared to defend yourself? If someone grabbed your purse, would you let go or fight back? These are important questions to think about not only when traveling, but in your everyday environment. You will hear a woman’s personal account of her experience, and how she would react differently if it happened again. Advice will be offered on being prepared if you’re threatened, how to respond, what to remember about your assailant, and more. A third-degree black-belt instructor will also give a mini self-defense lesson to prepare you for the unexpected. The talk will be held on Thursday, July 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Henry Low M.D. Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.

Emotional Ambush: You’re rolling along, hale and hearty. Life seems good. But suddenly it feels like your life has been hijacked and is being controlled by someone you thought you could trust. You’ve been emotionally ambushed! Ilene Wolf, founder and director of HEAL (Healing Emotionally Abused Lives) will talk about how to regain your balance and be less vulnerable to emotional violation in the future. The talk will be held on Tuesday, July 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Medical Arts and Research Building, room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
