Celebrate Women Programs: June 2007

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of educational programs are being offered in June.

Advances in Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery: If you’ve been considering a hip or knee replacement, this talk is for you. Dr. Jay Lieberman, a nationally recognized joint replacement surgeon and chairman of orthopaedic surgery at the UConn Health Center, will discuss the latest techniques in knee and hip replacements. The talk will be held on Thursday, June 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Riverfront Community Center, 300 Welles St., Glastonbury.

Spirituality Study Group: Tap into your inner self, the source of guidance and advice on the things that matter most to us. Group sessions will be led by Kathleen Kiley, an expert in spiritual healing and dream analysis, on the second Thursday of each month and will include discussion, reflection, dream interpretation, and guided meditations to unite your inner and outer self. The group will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Medical Arts and Research Building, room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10.

Lumps and Bumps - When to Be Concerned: Musculoskeletal oncology is the subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumors. These tumors vary in their prevalence. Fortunately, most are fairly easy to treat; however, some are extremely aggressive and dangerous. Dr. Eric Silverstein, orthopaedic surgeon at the UConn Health Center, will present several case examples, discuss the diagnosis and treatment, and provide an overview of these rare tumors. The talk will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low M.D. Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.

Shoulder and Elbow Injuries - Prevention and Treatment: Summer is the time for outdoor activities. Whether you’re gardening or playing a sport, injuries can happen, specifically to the shoulder or elbow. Orthopaedic surgeons, Drs. Robert Arciero, Augustus Mazzocca, and Kevin Shea, will discuss how you can condition yourself for the active summer months and also provide information about surgical and non-surgical treatments for the shoulder and elbow. The program, moderated by Dr. Jay Lieberman, the chairman of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute, will be held on Tuesday, June 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Henry Low M.D. Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.

Registration for these programs is required. The programs are free unless otherwise noted. Call 866-433-6253 or 860-679-8899. For more information, visit the Celebrate Health web site: www.celebrate.uchc.edu.
