Dean, School of Dentistry, University of California, to Speak at UConn Medical and Dental Schools Commencement May 13

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc., dean of the School of Dentistry and professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, will speak at the UConn School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine commencement exercises Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Connecticut Convention Center, 100 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford.

Dr. Bertolami has more than 25 years of experience and commitment to oral health. He has served as vice president and president of the American Association for Dental Research, and was recently named president-elect of the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Bertolami co-chaired the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Workshop on Biometrics, Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials, and later its blue-ribbon panel on Research Training and Career Development. He served as a member of the Dental Panel for the Committee on Monitoring the Changing Needs for Biomedical Research Personnel of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, exploring current and future needs of dental biomedical and behavioral research personnel.

Early in his career Dr. Bertolami served as an assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Health Center before accepting a position at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston. In 1989, he moved to the West Coast, where he held numerous appointments at the School of Dentistry, University of California at Los Angeles, having reached the position of associate dean for faculty affairs before leaving for his current position as dean of the UCSF School of Dentistry.

Medical degrees will be awarded to 76 graduates and dental medicine degrees to 36 graduates. Degrees will also be conferred to graduates of master’s programs in public health, dental science, and science and biomedical science.
