Celebrate Women Programs: February 2008
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of programs are being offered in February.
Free Cholesterol Screening: The screening will take place on Friday, Feb. 1, 9 to 11 a.m. in Keller Lobby at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. Registration is required by calling 860-679-8899 or toll-free 866-433-6253 as space is limited.
Hypertension: Patrick Coll, M.D., professor and director of clinical programs, Center on Aging at the UConn Health Center, will discuss what causes hypertension and the latest treatment options. The lecture will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m. to noon, at the Seabury Retirement Community, 200 Seabury Drive, Bloomfield. It is free and open to the public. Registration is required by calling Seabury at 860-243-6070.
Walk Your Way to a Healthy Heart: The easiest way to prevent heart disease is to take a walk. Celebrate National Wear Red Day and join us for a walk through the corridors and stairwells of the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington on Friday, Feb. 1, from noon to 1 p.m. Dr. Bruce Liang, chairman of cardiology, will kick-off the half mile trek from Keller Lobby with a brief discussion on women’s heart disease. Remember to wear red … and comfortable shoes! Co-sponsored with the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center.
Pre-diabetes – Treatment and Prevention: Pre-diabetes is a serious medical condition that can be treated. People with pre-diabetes can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes through modest lifestyle changes. Jean Kostak, diabetes education specialist, will discuss if you are at risk for developing pre-diabetes or diabetes and what you can do to decrease your chances. The talk will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Myths and Truths about Heart Disease in Women: Peter Schulman, M.D., UConn Health Center cardiologist, will discuss the myths and truths of heart disease, detection, treatment, and how to lower your likelihood of developing this leading cause of death in women. The talk will be held Wednesday, Feb.20, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 50 Raymond Road, West Hartford.
Reverse the Aging Process: Learn how to begin a basic program of aerobic exercise and strength training, and tips on exercising with chronic diseases. Registered nurse Lori Hoover and physical therapist Nancy Figulski will discuss good nutrition, losing weight, lowering your blood pressure, and lowering your cholesterol. Co-sponsored with the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurse Association. The program will be held Monday, Feb. 25, noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. Heart Health in Women: Kanwar Singh, M.D., UConn Health Center cardiologist, will discuss prevention and treatment of heart disease in women. The lecture will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, noon to 1 p.m., at Avery Heights, 705 New Britain Avenue, Hartford. It is free and open to the public.
You Only Have One Heart: Learn about the inner workings of the heart and vascular system during a special Discovery Series. The free program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Health Center’s Keller Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The snow date is Feb. 28. Speakers will include Bruce T. Liang, M.D., director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center, Kanwar Singh, M.D., and Michael Dahn, M.D.
