Celebrate Women Programs: June 2008

Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A variety of programs are being offered in June.

Is Your Home Making You Sick?: Do you have headaches or sinus problems and feel worse at home rather than at work? Hear about the top 10 environmental contaminants found in homes, their health effects, and what you can do about it. Dr. Mitch Kennedy has 18 years experience as a specialist in the use of non-toxic materials and chemicals. The talk will take place on Monday, June 2, 12 to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. Take Charge of Your Heart and Your Stress Level: Did you know that 80 percent of heart disease is preventable? Learn about the types of heart disease and their risk factors; heart attack symptoms; and doctor-recommended levels for blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index. Following the talk by cardiologist Anjanette Senatus, enjoy a mindfulness-based stress reduction meditation, which will help you deal with factors that cause unnecessary stress. Limit 16. Living with Fibromyalgia - Relief through Reflexology: Reflexology has shown promising results for managing fibromyalgia. Explore what you can do to help manage pain, improve sleep patterns, and increase energy. The class will focus on the principals of reflexology, current research related to reflexology and fibromyalgia, and hands-on instructions in reflexology techniques. Limit 16. The talk will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Breathe…more, llc., 68 Hartford Turnpike, Tolland.

Voice Care - Improve Quality and Prevent Injury: A disruption of vocal health can result in significant changes to quality of life and even your career. Don’t wait until you experience difficulties with your voice to begin taking care of it. Join us for a multimedia lecture about vocal care basics, including common voice disorders and how to prevent them. The talk will take place on Thursday, June 19, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
