Building Partnerships that Educate and Empower: Take Your Child to Work Day at UConn Health Center

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Nearly two hundred children from across the state, ranging in age from 8 to 15, are expected to take part in this year’s Take Your Child to Work Day at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington on Thursday, April 23, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The UConn Health Center is joining many other state and national organizations in support of the special event. “Children are our most precious resources,” said Rosie Rodríguez, Health Center education and development specialist, who was instrumental in planning the day. “They will grow up to become the business and community leaders, doctors, scientists, educators and artists of tomorrow. Through this program, we can show girls and boys work opportunities they may not know exist,” added Rodriguez.

The event will include a Career Fair for teenagers and a Health & Safety Fair for the younger kids. The Career Fair will have representatives from such areas as optometry, dentistry, internal medicine, and stem cell research. The Health & Safety Fair will have demonstrations from the Connecticut Poison Control Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Rehabilitation Services and Public Safety.

Following the fairs, there will be a number of hands-on workshops and departmental tours including a Gross Anatomy tour in the medical school where children will see first-hand the difference between diseased organs – such as a smoker’s heart and lungs – and healthy ones.
