Infectious Disease Physician Joins UConn Health Center

Dr. Trini Mathew Also Serving as Hospital Epidemiologist

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Dr. Trini Mathew has joined the University of Connecticut Health Center in the dual role of infectious diseases physician and hospital epidemiologist.

A hospital epidemiologist, sometimes referred to as an infection-control specialist, is a clinician who studies and reviews the incidence, distribution and control of disease.

After earning her medical degree with honors from the Tver State Medical Academy in Tver, Russia, Mathew completed her residency training and chief residency in internal medicine at the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. She completed a clinical fellowship in infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and pursued research on tuberculosis and alcohol use disorders in the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, both in Boston. Her Master of Public Health degree is from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, where she also served as an instructor. She joins the UConn Health Center from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she was an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Mathew’s particular areas of interest include HIV, tuberculosis, alcohol use disorders, and infections in the immunocompromised. She also is seeing patients at the International Traveler’s Medical Service, which provides medications, immunizations and pre-trip counseling for those traveling to parts of the world that may expose them to unfamiliar health risks.

Mathew is a resident of Farmington.
