Dr. Jay R. Lieberman Elected to Leadership Role with American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Dr. Jay R. Lieberman, a nationally prominent joint replacement surgeon and director of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center, has been elected to a leadership role with the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Lieberman will formally become the third vice president in early 2012 and he will assume the role of president in 2015.

AAHKS is a national organization devoted to excellence in hip and knee care through patient advocacy, education and research. Its membership includes prominent surgical specialists and subspecialists with expertise in adult joint reconstruction. Lieberman has previously served as the chair of the AAHKS Education Committee and is credited with overseeing new educational programs for orthopaedic residents and significantly expanding participation in the organization’s national conference.

“I am honored by this designation and look forward to helping AAHKS continue to achieve its mission of advancing hip and knee care for the millions of patients who suffer from joint pain,” Lieberman said.

In addition to seeing patients and leading the New England Musculoskeletal Institute, Lieberman is also a professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UConn Health Center. An Avon resident, his many clinical, academic and research accomplishments continue to be recognized by national organizations.

Earlier this year, the Orthopaedic Research Society named Lieberman winner of the Marshall R. Urist Award for Excellence in Tissue Regeneration Research. The Urist Award recognizes researchers who have demonstrated major achievements in the area of tissue regeneration.

In 2009, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering inducted Lieberman into its College of Fellows. In addition, he is a member of both the prestigious Hip Society and Knee Society.
