Laurencin Appointed to Prestigious Federal Panel

Advisory Committee Counsels NIH Director

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, director of the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Institute for Regenerative Engineering and chief executive officer of the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (CICATS), has been appointed to the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee to the Director.

As an advisory committee member, Laurencin will support and counsel Dr. Francis Collins, NIH Director, on matters of planning, managing and coordinating the programs and activities of all NIH components. Since 1966, the panel has advised the director on policy and planning issues important to the NIH mission of conducting and supporting biomedical and behavioral research, research training and translating research results for the public.

“It’s quite humbling to be asked to serve Dr. Francis Collins in this role,” says Laurencin, whose term on the committee runs through the end of 2015. “This is a tremendous honor.”

Earlier this year, Laurencin, who lives in Avon, was presented with an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly recognizing his leadership accomplishments at the UConn Health Center. In addition to being named to America’s Top Doctors, he is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. He is a University Professor at UConn.
